Yeats, William Butler: Na žiadosť básne o vojne (On being asked for a War Poem in Slovak)

Portre of Yeats, William Butler
Portre of Répás Norbert

Back to the translator

On being asked for a War Poem (English)

I think it better that in times like these
A poet keep his mouth shut, for in truth
We have no gift to set a statesman right;
He has had enough of meddling who can please
A young girl in the indolence of her youth,
Or an old man upon a winter’s night.

Na žiadosť básne o vojne (Slovak)

V časoch ako dnes, myslím že je lepšie,
keď básnik zmĺkne, aj keby hrom udrel,
nemáme dar, ktorý by politikom moc staval;
Dosť zasahoval ten, kto zdarné potešenie
dievke do ľahostajnej mladosti šumel
alebo dlhú zimnú noc starcom zohrial.
