Borges, Jorge Luis: Un cuchillo en el norte

Portre of Borges, Jorge Luis

Un cuchillo en el norte (Spanish)

Allá por el Maldonado,
Que hoy corre escondido y ciego,
Allá por el barrio gris
Que cantó el pobre Carriego,

Tras una puerta entornada
Que da al patio de la parra,
Donde las noches oyeron
El amor de la guitarra,

Habrá un cajón y al fondo
Dormirá con duro brillo,
Entre esas cosas que el tiempo
Sabe olvidar, un cuchillo.

Fue de aquel Saverio Suárez,
Por más mentas el Chileno,
Que en garitos y elecciones
Probó siempre que era bueno.

Los chicos, que son el diablo,
Lo buscarán con sigilo
Y probarán en la yema
Si no se ha mellado el filo.

Cuántas veces hará entrado
En la carne de un cristiano
Y ahora está arrumbado y solo,
A la espera de una mano,

Que es polvo. Tras el cristal
Que dora un sol amarillo,
A través de años y casas,
Yo te estoy viendo, cuchillo.

A northside knife (English)

There along the Maldonado
That's hidden now and blind,
There in the grizzled slum
Poor Carriego sang,

Behind a door ajar
That gives on yard and vine,
Where night heard
The guitar's love,

Will be a box and at the bottom
Will be sleeping with hard shine
Among those things that time
Knows how to forget, a knife.

It was that Saverio Suárez's,
Better known as el Chileno,
Who in gambling halls and elections
Always proved himself the good one.

Boys, who are the devil
Will look for it with stealth
And try with a fingertip
To see if its edge is nicked.

How many times it entered
The flesh of a Christian
And now it's put away alone,
Waiting for a hand,

That's dust. Behind the glass
A yellow sun gilds,
Across years and houses,
I'm looking at you, knife.
