Biography

Vladimir Beekman (born 23 August 1929 in Tallinn – 3 October 2009 in Tallinn) was an Estonian writer, poet and translator. He was married to Aimée Beekman who was also a successful and translated author. They were both graduates of Gerasimov Institute of Cinematography and they worked together on an early important film, Fellow Villagers that showed some freedom from Soviet control. The plot did involve an unsuccessful espionage attempt from a Western country, but it did show some post Stalinist freedoms. In particular it explored the micro troubles of fisherman who have real characters and alternative views which are not cast as either right or wrong.
