Holappa, Pentti: Istumme kaksin...

Portre of Holappa, Pentti

Istumme kaksin... (Finnish)

Istumme kaksin suuressa ravintolasalissa. Lamppujen säännöllinen tähtikuvio hiipuu. Tarjoilijat tulevat ja menevät harvakseen, liukuvat lattiamattoa pitkin. Etäällä keittiössä helähtää lasi tai nauru.

Ikkunan alla piilossa solisee suihkulähde. Rauhallinen nurmikko levittäytyy rantakadulle asti. Laiturissa kelluu muutama riisuttu purjevene.

Ikuisuuden hopeavaloa sataa. Tarjoilija tuo laskun.

We're sitting... (English)

We're sitting à deux in the grand dining room of a restaurant. The regularly constellated chandeliers are dimming. The waiters are hovering, gliding over the carpeting. In the far kitchen there's the tinkle of a glass or a laugh.

Tucked away beneath the window a fountain's purling. A lawn spreads serenely down to the promenade. Along the wharf a few yachts bob, their sails furled. The autumn trees on the far shore are being annealed by a sun we divine but don’t see. The sun's deserting the landscape. The moon's easing its shoulder into the branches of the trees. Ten minutes, and it bursts free and buoys up, belly first, towards the zenith.

A man and a woman three paces behind him are walking the shore and contemplating the calm water. A solitary dog-owner is leading his dog. Inaudibly, the cars come in and out of sight with their headlights on.

A gossamer tapestry of timelessness is spreading over the chaos. We know space is boiling and the sea foaming, but our senses are stopping the moment. The silver light of eternity’s raining down on us. The waiter brings the bill.
