Gregh, Fernand: The silence of the waters (Le silence de l'eau in English)

Portre of Gregh, Fernand

Le silence de l'eau (French)

Le grand jet d'eau qui sanglotait
Nuit et jour, âme inconsolée
Sous la voute à demi croulée
Est mort cette nuit et se tait

Et le vent fou qui l'insultait
Et chassait sa gerbe en volée
Mele les feuilles de l'allée
A son silence qui chantait

Mais sa tristesse survit toute
Tandis qu'autrefois á goutte
Tressaillait l'écho de la voute

Maintenant l'eau qui remuait
Semble un lac de pleurs sourds...
Ecoute: Il y rode un sanglot muet.

The silence of the waters (English)

The big fountain that sobbed
Day and night, heartbroken soul
Under the vault half collapsed
Has died tonight and remains silent

And the foolish wind that insulted it
And pursued its beam in flight
Blending the leafs of the alley
To his singing silence

But his sadness outlasts everything
Meanwhile back then drop by drop
Trembled the echo of the vault

Now the water that stirred
Resembles a lake of muffled tears…
Listen: there prowls around a silent sob.
