Miron, Gaston: The Damned Canuck (Le Damned Canuck in English)

Portre of Miron, Gaston

l’homme du cheap way, l’homme du cheap work

le damned Canuck

The Damned Canuck (English)

We are numerous, silent, rough, jagged and planed down

under the fog of raw sorrows

going to trouble to dive at the stump of woes,

a manger fire in the guts

and the head, good lord,

the head a little at loss at regaining both our hands,

we, by freeze and extreme lassitude caught

life’s burning itself out through dead-end tiredness,

life softly toned down, cherishing its lament

with eyes of anguish disguised as naive confidence

with pure water retina on the native mountain

life always at the edge of air

always at the waterline of world consciousness,

the door knob pulled out

jingle, burst open, jingling bells of your entrails,

laugh and celebrate at the cup of your privileges,

great men, maskerading class, who made out of me

that sub-human, suffering grimace of the cro-magnon

that cheap way man, the cheap work man

the damned Canuck
