Ady Endre: By the foot of Mount Zion (A Sion-hegy alatt in English)

Portre of Ady Endre

A Sion-hegy alatt (Hungarian)

Borzolt, fehér Isten-szakállal,

Tépetten, fázva fújt, szaladt,

Az én Uram, a rég feledett,

Nyirkos, vak, őszi hajnalon,

Valahol Sion-hegy alatt.

Egy nagy harang volt a kabátja,

Piros betükkel foltozott,

Bús és kopott volt az öreg Úr,

Paskolta, verte a ködöt,

Rórátéra harangozott.

Lámpás volt reszkető kezemben

És rongyolt lelkemben a Hit

S eszemben a régi ifjuság:

Éreztem az Isten-szagot

S kerestem akkor valakit.

Megvárt ott, a Sion-hegy alján

S lángoltak, égtek a kövek.

Harangozott és simogatott,

Bekönnyezte az arcomat,

Jó volt, kegyes volt az öreg.

Ráncos, vén kezét megcsókoltam

S jajgatva törtem az eszem:

»Hogy hívnak téged, szép, öreg Úr,

Kihez mondottam sok imát?

Jaj, jaj, jaj, nem emlékezem.«

»Halottan visszajöttem hozzád

Én, az életben kárhozott.

Csak tudnék egy gyermeki imát.«

Ő nézett reám szomorún

S harangozott, harangozott.

»Csak nagyszerű nevedet tudnám.«

Ő várt, várt s aztán fölszaladt.

Minden lépése zsoltár-ütem:

Halotti zsoltár. S én ülök

Sírván a Sion-hegy alatt.

By the foot of Mount Zion (English)

With his God-beard, white and tussled,

puffing with cold, bedraggled, torn;

so ran, my Lord, the long forgotten,

somewhere below Mount Zion,

ran on a damp, blind autumn morn.

He wore a big bell for a great-coat,

patched with red letters, mended well,

but sad and tattered was the old Lord

and, slapping the mists about him,

for the dawn Mass, he rang the bell.

With trembling hands, I held a lantern,

the Faith was in my ragged soul

and long-gone youth had occupied me:

I smelled a God-smell in my nostrils

and finding someone was my goal.

He waited for me by Mount Zion,

Flaming rocks lay in front, behind.

He rang the bell whilst He caressed me,

And shed his tears upon my face,

for the old one was good and kind.

I held his wrinkled hand and kissed it,

And lamenting, I racked my brain:

"Dear ancient Lord, what do they call you,

You, to whom I prayed so often?

I try recalling, try in vain…”

“I, who have died, am now returning,

I, who in life was damned to hell -

If only I could pray like children!"

He looked at me full of sadness

And kept ringing, ringing the bell.

"Your mighty name… if I remembered...”

He waited, then ran up the steep.

His every step was the beat of psalms:

psalms for the dead. And I

sit by Mount Zion and weep.
