Benjámin László: In a snow-fall (A hóesésben in English)

Portre of Benjámin László

Back to the translator

A hóesésben (Hungarian)

Késő éjjel mentem haza
  a hóesésben.
Kívülem egy lélek sem járt már
  a Béke téren.

De nem! A téren két szerelmes
  állt összebújva.
Hajukat a goromba évszak
  hóval befújta.

Ölelték egymást önfeledten,
  nem vettek észre.
Nem néztek hóra, szélre sem, csak
  egymás szemébe.

Fehér volt már a tér egészen,
  de körülöttük
kör támadt, – a hulló pihéket
  felfogta testük.

Szerelem, ifjúság varázs-
  körében álltak;
tovább siettem – meg ne törjön
  a szép varázslat.

Kívántam nekik ott magamban
  sok földi szépet
s hogy életük ne háborítsák
  haragos évek

és akkor is így nézzenek még
  egymás szemébe,
mikor a tél végképp befesti
  hajukat fehérre.

In a snow-fall (English)

I walked home in the dead of night,
  went through falling snow
and, apart from me, in Béke Place
  none were on the go.

But no!  There were two lovers there
  huddling in the square.
Rough season's winds picked up the snow:
  sprayed it on their hair.

They held each other, were quite unfazed,
  did not notice me.
They took no heed of the snow or wind:
  eye just eye could see.

The square was covered in white, those two
  stood there, breast to breast,
a circle of fallen flakes had formed:
  bodies caught the rest.

They stood in a conjured circle of
  love, and youth as well;
I hurried along, tried not to break
  that sweet magic spell.

And under my breath I wished for them
  everything that cheers,
had hoped that their lives would never be
  marred by angry years,

and that they'd keep gazing eye to eye,
  never lose that sight,
when winter's hand completes the painting
  of their hair to white.
