Csoóri Sándor: My Mother A Black Rose (Anyám fekete rózsa in English)

Portre of Csoóri Sándor

Back to the translator

Anyám fekete rózsa (Hungarian)

Anyámnak fáj a feje,
nem iszik feketét -
Anyámnak fáj a feje,
nem szed be porokat:
szótlanabb sápadtsággal
feji meg tehenét,
szótlanabb sápadtsággal
söpröget, mosogat.

Anyámra durván szólnak
jöttment idegenek?
Anyám az ijedtségtől
dadog és bereked.
Sötét kendőjét vonván,
magányát húzná össze:
ne bántsa többé senki,
félelmét ne tetőzze.

Anyám utakon lépdel
s nem jut el sehova.
Szegénység csillagától
sebes a homloka;
vállára még az orgonavirág
is úgy szakad,
mintha csak teher volna,
jószagú kárhozat.

Nyár van égen és földön,
zene szól, muzsika,
Anyám csönd-sivatagján
el kell pusztulnia.
Gépek, gyártmányok zengnek
csodáktól szélütötten,
de egy se futna hozzá:
„segítek, azért jöttem”.

Anyámnak fáj a feje -
anyámnak fáj a semmi,
Anyám fekete rózsa
nem tud kiszínesedni.
Egy éjjel földre roskad,
megtört lesz majd, kicsi -
Bejön egy madár érte
s csőrében elviszi.

My Mother A Black Rose (English)

My Mother’s got a headache,
she doesn’t drink coffee -
My Mother’s got a headache,
she doesn’t take pills:
paler and more silent,
she milks her cow softly,
paler and more silent
she sweeps, washes up dishes.

My Mother’s spoken to rudely
by some upstart strangers?
My Mother’s fright makes her
voice hoarse, she stammers.
Drawing her dark scarf around
she’d wrap up her loneliness:
they shouldn’t hurt her any more,
no one make her fears worse.

My Mother’s walking on roads
not getting anywhere.
The star of poverty has
made scars on her forehead;
on her shoulders even lilac
petals keep pouring so,
as if they were some burden,
sweet-smelling damnation.

It’s summer in sky, on earth,
music playing, melody,
on Mother’s silence-desert
it all has to perish.
Machines and products resound
palsied by miracles,
but none would run up to her:
’I’ll help, that’s why I’m here.

My Mother’s got a headache -
emptiness makes her suffer,
My Mother is a black rose,
she cannot turn coloured.
One night she’ll fall to the ground,
she’ll be tattered, very little -
A bird will come to fetch her
and take her off in its beak.
