Csoóri Sándor: Barbár őszi vers (részlet)

Portre of Csoóri Sándor

Barbár őszi vers (részlet) (Hungarian)

1.
Ablakpárkányon napfény rozsda…
Erdők taraján vér pirosa…
Arcok zuhannak ködtükörbe…
Szédül a világ megint őszbe.

Csillag és szél összeverekszik,
ravatalon egy költő fekszik,
halott szeretők szeme gyertya,
ég a fejénél, csontkéz tartja.

Aki megnézi: csönddé válik,
sírkő-utcákon fut hazáig,
felhőt töröl le homlokáról,
s örül, hogy él, hogy lépcsőt számol.

Barbarian Autumn Lines (detail) (English)

1.
On the windowsill sunshine-rust…
Crest of woods like the red of blood…
Faces hurtle in misty mirrors…
The world again in fall totters.

The stars and the wind start fighting,
there’s a poet in the morgue lying,
dead lovers’ eyes burning candles stand
at his head held by a bone-hand.

Who looks at him, becomes stillness,
runs home on gravestone streets, breathless,
wipes off a cloud from his forehead,
glad to live, count the stairs ahead.
