Csoóri Sándor: Vallomás a városhoz

Portre of Csoóri Sándor

Vallomás a városhoz (Hungarian)

Mennyi szélsodorta szemét az utcán,
mennyi kiüresedett, kóbor arc
s fojtogató füstcsík a város égboltja alatt!
És mennyi kilúgozott szerelem a falak mögött!
De ha a szenvedély zöldre vált át,
mint átkelőhelyek lámpái kis időre,
meglódulnak a visszafogott lombok, az esők,
a magasból csipkefüggönyök havaznak
s a villamos vágányain
végigszáguld valami fényes őrület,
sípol és sír, mint a fejhangon
sikoltó furulya.

Szeretlek? Nem szeretlek? A naptár
lapjait tépkedem, Város, harminc éve.
Csavargok utcáidon,
de nem tudom, hova megyek.
Itt minden közelebb van a kézhez, a testhez,
közelebb a gyönyörhöz s gyilkoláshoz,
a bojlerek sárkánytorkaiból
lángok lövellnek arcomig, mint a mesében
és lent, a kéregalatti szennycsatornáidban
folyvást zuhog az öröklétű mocsok.
A tiéd vagyok, Város? Vagy csak a
foglyod vagyok?

Gyakran elhagylak, megtagadlak és visszasóvárgok oda,
ahol a tüzek úgy feküsznek le
most is a földre,
mint kimerült, igás állatok,
s a kertben sündisznó jár, az ősvilág bizalmasa,
de bársonyos mocorgásában egyszer csak
megcsikorgul százezer ablakod, vasad
és szép, idegbeteg nőid is fölsikoltanak árván
s én máris ott vagyok velük újra
a fölfelé suhanó, tükrös felvonókban,
a földalatti vonat hajat úsztató huzatában

megsokszorozódva tömérdek pillantásodtól és
őrületemtől. Ha nem te fogadsz magadhoz,
talán csak egy erdő gondolkodik velem
s a Holdra könyöklő halál
veled veszek.

Confession To The City (English)

How much rubbish the wind sweeps down the street,
how many faces drifting, emptied of matter
and streaks of choking smoke below the city sky!
And how much bleached out love behind the walls!
But when the passions briefly change to green
as signals do at traffic lights,
the branches which were restrained begin to sway, the rain
descends from high in towering lacework curtains
and a brilliant madness shudders
along the whole length of the tramway,
whistling and whining like a flute
pitched at high falsetto.

I love you, I love you not…? For thirty years, city,
I have been tearing pages from your calendar.
I amble down your streets
with no idea of direction.
Here things lie close to hand and to the body,
closer to delight, to homicide.
The boilers are dragons who open monstrous throats
to shoot their flames about my face, as in the legend,
and down below, under the crust, your sewers
throb continuously in eternal squalor.
Am I yours then, city? or simply
your prisoner?

Often I leave you, deny you and yearn to be where
even now the fire stretches out
along the earth
like some exhausted beast of burden,
and in gardens the hedgehogs scuttle, prehistoric representatives
whose velvety mumbling is suddenly rent
by the squeal of your million windows, your fetters,
your lovely neurotic women who scream out forsaken,
and there I am with them again,
in the lifts full of mirrors, shimmering upward,
in the hair-raising draughts of the underground,

in multiple reflections from your million eyes and
from my own madness. If you will not accept me,
only the woods may give thought to my presence, or death
with his elbows propped on the moon,
and the world won't call on me in an emergency,
won't send for me, won't wait nor pursue me with music,
from which I may learn immortality. You tremble
excitingly on my white membranes, like
beans on a drum in vibration. Does smoke swallow you up?
Earthquakes perhaps? Burgeoning roses of wildfire? Though I betray you
I'll perish with you.
