Diák voltam itt három évig.
Ma sem tudom, miért szerettem
e várost. Hófedte utcáin
versenyt futottam a szelekkel,
éheztem hosszan és titokban,
az élet értelmét kutattam,
lengő cégtáblákkal, padokkal
barátkoztam s szökőkutakkal,
majd a színésznő, kinek taknyos
voltam, s kire a sarkon három,
négy, öt órát vártam, míg megjött,
de ezt nem bántam s most se bánom,
Thomas Mannért és Karl Krausért
rajongtam, festményeket néztem
a múzeumokban vasárnap
reggel, s nem voltam boldog mégsem,
bár a reményt nem adtam fel, hogy
hamar meghalok tüdővészben.
S mindezt azért, mert sok rossz verset
írtam s azt hittem: egyre jobbak,
letisztáztam szép gyöngybetűkkel,
s hazaküldtem a hírlapoknak,
s hogy lapozgattam a friss példányt
a kioszk előtt, sívó szélben,
esőben! Mindhiába; mégcsak
a szerkesztő sem üzent nékem,
csak egyszer. Így szólt: hagyja abba!
Ettől végleg elkeseredtem.
Híres költő akartam lenni,
és beláttam, hogy lehetetlen.

Sono stato studente qui, per tre anni.
Neanche oggi mi spiego,
perché abbia amato questa città.
Sulle sue strade, coperte di neve,
ho fatto a gara con il vento, ho patito,
lungo e di nascosto, la fame,
ho fatto amicizie con le panchine,
insegne ondeggianti e con le fontane,
poi l’attrice, per cui ero solo un pivellino,
l’aspettavo all’angolo della strada,
tre, quattro, cinque ore,il suo arrivo, ma non
mi son mai pentito allora e neppure ora.
Mi esaltavo per Thomas Mann e Karl Kraus,
domeniche mattine ammiravo
i dipinti nei musei, tuttavia non ero felice,
anche se la speranza, di morire
un giorno di tisi, non l’ho mai perduta.
Tutto questo, per aver scritte tante poesie
malriuscite, credendo di scriverle sempre
più belle, le scrivevo in bella copia,
con una calligrafia accurata,
le mandavo ai quotidiani a casa,
sfogliando poi la nuova edizione, nel sibilo
del vento e della pioggia, davanti l’edicola!
Tutto inutile; finché il redattore, una volta
non mi rispose. Mi disse cosi: lo lasci perdere!
Questo mi fece disperare completamente.
Volevo diventare un famoso poeta,
ma mi son dovuto ricredere;
ciò era impossibile.
