Jékely Zoltán: Dragon slaying (Sárkányölés in English)

Portre of Jékely Zoltán

Sárkányölés (Hungarian)

Megint az órjás, ronda varangy!
Hogy vartyog az éjben, a csendben!
Fülembe harsog, betölti szobámat –
s már látom előttem dülledt, sárga szemét.
De hol, micsoda zug, csatorna odva rejti?
Hol hömpölygeti has-testét, az ocsmányt,
hogy belerúgjak, összetiporjam!

Mily békén alszik a város,
a fáradt emberi lelkek pihegése
bolyhosan omlik az útra,
álmok mocorognak a párás
ablakokon – és a béke nagy álma
áll össze belőlük, s száll az egekbe.
S most íme, előlről kelljen a rémet
hallani ebben a csendben! –
Bagzó kedvében förtelmes párt keres újra
sokasítani ronda magát? –

Egy kapumélyből böffen elő, ott vartyog
pöfögő hasfeje – látom! Az undor,
a dűh futtomba fog el,
féltéglát ragadok fel, s teljes erőmből
belevágom az iszonyú testbe – dögölj meg! –
s még látom, a béle hogy omlik,
hurkásan hogy gomolyog a homályban,
s rém-szeme hogy mered énrám,
a Szent György-napján születettre,
ki íme, megölte, újra megölte a Sárkányt!

Dragon slaying (English)

That hideous overgrown toad again!
How it croaks through the night, in the silence!
It blares in my ear, it fills my apartment -
already I see its dull yellow eyes before me.
But where is it hidden, what nook, or what sewer?
Where's its rolling belly, that monstrosity,
show me so I can kick it or grind it under!

How soundly the town sleeps,
the panting spirits of tired humanity
tumble softly across the wide pavement,
their dreams are fumbling at clouded
windowpanes - are joined in one outsize
dream of peace rising slowly to heaven.
And look, we must hear that terror again
right from the beginning, in the silence!
Is it in rutting mood, seeking a loathsome partner
to reproduce its repulsive image? -

From a gateway it belches into view, its huffing
belly in full croak - I see it! Disgust and fury
pursue me as I run, and I
grab at a half-brick, and smash it as hard
as I can, into his horrible body - death to all such! -
and I can still see its guts spilling out,
how they ripple in coils in the half-light,
and its monstrous eye keeps staring at me,
I, who was born on the day of St George, I
once slew the dragon, and now again slay it.
