József Attila: Grief (A bánat in English)

Portre of József Attila
Portre of N. Ullrich Katalin

Back to the translator

A bánat (Hungarian)

A bánat szürke, néma postás,

Sovány az arca, szeme kék,

Keskeny válláról táska lóg le,

Köntöse ócska, meg setét.

Mellében olcsó tik-tak lüktet,

Az utcán félénken suhan,

Odasímul a házfalakhoz

És eltűnik a kapuban.

Aztán kopogtat. Levelet hoz.

Grief (English)

Grief is a grey, silent postman,

His face is thin with blue eyes,

A bag hangs from his narrow shoulder,

His garment’s shabby and dark.

In his breast cheap tick-tack throbs,

He shyly sleeks in the streets,

Snuggles up to the walls of houses

And in the front-door disappears.

Then he knocks. He’s brought a letter.
