Juhász Gyula: Zene

Portre of Juhász Gyula

Zene (Hungarian)

Az ember, amíg fiatal, erős,

Úgy véli, hogy egész nagy zenekar

Van a szívében, kürtök és dobok,

Hegedűk, hárfák, csellók, fuvolák

És mind az élet örömét, a szépség,

A jóság és igazság himnuszát

Ujjongják viharozva és vidáman.

Nem veszi észre, hogy a jó zenészek

Lassacskán szépen elhallgatnak és

Elszöknek egyenkint egy más vidékre.

Nem veszi észre, hogy fekete posztó

Jön a dobokra és hogy elrekednek

A trombiták s a száguldó ütem

Mindegyre lassúbb. Mígnem egy napon

Magában áll az utolsó zenész

S tört hangszerén egy hang sír elhalón

Mintegy segítségért kiáltva égre,

Majd csak susog és elnémul örökre

A bánat.

Music (English)

When people are young and strong,

They  think quite a big orchestra’s

There in their hearts, horns and drums,

Violins, harps, cellos and flutes,

They all thunder the joy of life,

The hymn of beauty, goodness and

Justice wildly and cheerfully.

They don’t notice that good musicians

Slowly and gently fall silent and

Vanish one by one to somewhere else.

They don’t notice that black baize

Covers the drums, the trumpets

Sound hoarser, and the whirling rhythm

Gets slower and slower. Till one day, the

Last musician stands there alone,

His broken instrument plays one dim tone

As if crying for help to the sky,

Then there’s whisper only and endless silence

Of grief.
