Kölcsey Ferenc: Zrinyi’s song (Zrínyi dala in English)

Portre of Kölcsey Ferenc

Back to the translator

Zrínyi dala (Hungarian)

Hol van a hon, melynek Árpád vére
Győzelemben csorga szent földére,
Mely nevével hév szerelmet gyújt;
S messze képét bújdosó magzatja,
Még Kalypso keblén is siratja,
S kart feléje búsan vágyva nyújt?

Itt van a hon, ah nem mint a régi,
Pusztaságban nyúlnak el vidéki,
Többé nem győzelmek honja már;
Elhamvadt a magzat hő szerelme,
Nincs magasra vívó szenvedelme,
Jégkebelben fásult szívet zár.

Hol van a bérc, és a vár fölette,
Szondi melynek sáncait védlette,
Tékozolva híven életét;
Honnan a hír felszáll, s arculatja
Lángsugárit távol ragyogtatja,
S fényt a késő századokra vét?

Itt van a bérc, s omladék fölette,
Mely a hőst és hírét eltemette,
Bús feledség hamván, s néma hant;
Völgyben űl a gyáva kor s határa
Szűk köréből őse saslakára
Szédeleg ha néha felpillant.

És hol a nép, mely pályát izzadni,
S izzad s közt hősi bért aratni
Ősz atyáknak nyomdokin tanúlt;
S szenvedett bár, s bajról bajra hága,
Hervadatlan volt szép ifjusága,
A jelenben múlt s jövő virúlt?

Vándor állj meg! korcs volt anyja vére,
Más faj állott a kihúnyt helyére,
Gyönge fővel, romlott, szívtelen;
A dicső nép, mely tanúlt izzadni,
S izzad s közt hősi bért aratni,
Névben él csak, többé nincs jelen.

Zrinyi’s song (English)

Where is the land, where chief Árpád’s blood
Poured out in victory to seal a bond
Which lights an ardent love with its name;
Whose image by the cast-away son
Is lamented on Calypso’s bosom,
Craving for it with a burning flame?

Here is the land, but oh, not like of old,
His counties are but empty meadows bald,
No longer a land of victories;
The ardent love had died down long ago
Its passions are all lowly and hollow
Its chest is of ice, its heart will freeze.

Where is the fort on the promontory
Whose high walls were defended by Szondi
Prodigally spending his own life;
Where from the flame rises up and its face
Lit up to be seen from afar in grace
And for centuries reflecting light?

Here, the ruins on the promontory,
For its hero now a cemetery,
Numb soil, sorrowful oblivion;
Our age cowardly sits in the valley
And glancing up at the promontory
Is dazed and fell into a swoon.

And where are the people to stay the course
Through sweat and blood, reaping rewards perforce
Having learnt it from their ancestors;
Though suffered and cut through tribulations
Their lives had had such untarnished stations
That their pasts were their futures’ investors?

Wanderer stop! Mixed was the mother’s race
Another one is standing in its place
Heartless, corrupted and weakheaded;
And the people who had once stayed the course
Through sweat and blood, reaping rewards perforce
Though alive in name, are really dead.
