Kassák Lajos: My Poetry (Költészetem in English)

Portre of Kassák Lajos

Back to the translator

Költészetem (Hungarian)

I.

Mentenem kéne ami menthető

s én csak ülök

súlyosan

akár egy kőtömb

akár az az óriási madár

akit kamaszkoromban megsebeztem és némán vérzett el a füzes árnyékában.

Csendben a világ ismeretlen részének mély csendjében

költeményeimet írom amelyek egyszerre innen és túl vannak az irodalmon

a megszokás törvényein

a hülyék révületén.

Elég volt az ömlesztett szépből

az örökölt effektusokból.

Az én költészetem nem az álmok kusza burjánzásából

hanem a geometria szigorú rendjéből születik

lefejti a gyümölcs héját

megszerkeszti az alaprajzot

térbeállítja a tárgyakat

eltakarítja a múlt romjait

s egy szebb jövendőt ígér.

Íme költészetem valóságlényege

szavaim tartalma

vallomásaim értelmetlennek vélt értelme

tűzeső

és jégcsapok csengése

amik az ellentétek törvénye szerint

egyszerre egymás mellett élnek

és betöltik a világ

ismert

ismeretlen

tájait.

II.

Nemcsak a szív énekel most

nem is csak a nyelv.

Szemem kék vize

fogaim kemény fehére

testem klasszikus szerkezete

szellemem felfoghatatlan anyaga

fejem milliónyi hajszála

kezem tíz ujja

akár egy orkeszter

tíz megszállott tagja

egyszerre cseng

hogy hírt adjanak rólam

a világnak.

Énekelek

a fényben

és árnyékban

mindazokért akik szerencsétlenül születtek

vagy később érte őket a szerencsétlenség

a süketekért

a vakokért

a hitetlenekért

az együgyűség áldozataiért

azokért akik halálba ugranak a hegycsúcsról

s azokért is akik nem mernek előbújni a barlangból.

Úgy énekelek

hogy valaki más

sorsa mélyéről visszhangozza

és képessé váljék rá hogy elinduljon

a part felé

ahol korunk anyaméhe vajúdik

ahol a földbevetett mag csírát fog

ahol a magtár kapuja nem tűri a lakatot

ahol a pásztor nem hagyja cserben nyáját

ahol az ember ráismer embertársára

kezébe veszi

az anyagot

a szerszámot

és megalkotja

élete értelmének

vértől piros

szenvedéstől fekete

jegyeit.

My Poetry (English)

I.

I ought to hurry to save can be saved

but all I do is sit

heavy, like a slab of stone

or like that big bird

I once killed when I was a youngster she bled to death

in the shade of a willow tree wounded and dumb.

In an unknown part of the world in deep silence

I write my poetry which is both customary

and outside the grooves of habit

the adulation of fools.

To hell with pre-manufactured beauty

and inherited hand-me-downs—

my poetry is not the product of hazy dreams

but out of geometry's logical order

it peels off the rind of fruits

arranges the object in space

sweeps away the grabage of the past

and promises a happier future.

This is the essence of my poetry, its truth,

this is the content

of my words the meaning of my testimony

some regard as meaningless

my poetry is

a fire-fall

and a tinkling of icicles

which due to the law of opposites

fills and evens out

the world's

unknown

regions.

II.

It's not my heart alone that sings now

neither is it language alone.

The blue tears of my eyes

the white calcium of my teeth

my body's classic frame

the indecipherable convolutions of my mind

the millions of hairs on my head

my hand's ten fingers

ten mesmerized members

of an orchestra playing in unison

to tell the world that

I exist.

I sing both in the light and in the dark

for the benefit of all who were born under an adverse

constellation

of came to grief as they got older

for those who can't hear

for those who can't see

for those who have lost their faith

for those possessed by foolishness

for those who commit suicide by leaping from

a mountain top

for those who're too scared to emerge

from their caves.

I sing

so that others

may pick up on my tune and echo it

from the depths of their fate

and be fortified

so they can dead in for the shore

I sing wherever the womb of life is in labor

I sing wherever the seed planted in the soil starts to swell

I sing wherever the barn-door doesn't have a padlock

I sing wherever the shepherd doesn't abandon his folck

I sing wherever humans can recognize a brother

who takes matter

and tools

in his hand

to create signs

scarlet red like blood

black with pain —

talking about the meaning

of his life.
