Gabor Kiraly: The Fogs (A ködök in English)

Portre of Gabor Kiraly

A ködök (Hungarian)

Vigasztalan esik a háztető
felett lappangó ködből az eső.
Nem vet árnyékot a fény,
mintha nem is e földtekén,
de szürke Szürreáliában
járna a lankadt útkereső.
Holnapra meghal az optimista,
s a depressziós se ússza meg,
a kihalt  város nyúlós rossza
a tört vakolattal együtt pereg
az aszfaltra, nem nézi senki rég a
járdát, ahol a kutyák potyadéka
érintetlen, mint a köd permete.
Mind útra keltünk az infernó fele.
Itt hagytunk reményt, életet, menedék
az árnyéktalan menhelyet,
ahol nem jutottunk semmire,
nélkülünk is kinyílt az estike,
és felnevelték fiókájukat
a verebek, cinegék, ludak,
napra, rendre megfordult a Föld,
és senki nem kérte, közöld
amit fontosnak tartasz,
de azért csak mondtad, te balfasz.
Bandukolunk felhajtott gallérral
a szürke ködben,
bár ki senki se sarkall,
megyünk, mert megállni
nem érdemes,
a múltunkba zárva végleges
tanulságokkal zsebünkben,
tétován rebbenő aggyal
töprengünk magunkon, mintha
volna enyhítő
körülmény ügyünkben.
Igaz, súlyosbító sincsen,
de így, az ítélet után
már mindegy. A pokol kapuján
átléptünk a parttalan szürke
ködbe, és hátratett kézzel
baktatunk tán egyenest, tán körbe,
és erővel azon vagyunk
fel ne ismerje agyunk, hogy
büntetésünk nem is olyan enyhe.
Arra ítéltettünk, minden úgy legyen
mint eddig. Mindörökre.

The Fogs (English)

Rain keeps falling unconsoled
from the cold smouldering fog.
Above the roof where there is a light
casting no shadows on the trite
Surreal world, unlike the Earth
where weary wanderers have scrolled.
The optimist shall die in time,
the doomed shall also disappear,
the wicked of a sorrow town
with broken mortar, all shall spin
onto the streets and city yards
where no one looks at excrements
of dogs, untouched as  misty rain.
We went to hell, we took the train
leaving behind our lives, our hopes,
shadeless shelters on steep slopes,
where we were greeted with mistrust.
Night shades will bloom, no need for us
and sparrows, mice and geese
will feed their young with expertise,
the Earth was turned upside down
but we were not asked to cry and moan
or the important to announce,
you nerd, but you went on and on.
We tread along with upturned cape
In the grey misty haze,
no instigator, but no escape
we just walk along
with our final lessons that belong
locked in our past, our empty bags
with trembling, waning brain
about ourselves we wonder
as if there were
a mitigating circumstance
in our affair.
True, nothing serious,
but now, the verdict said
It makes no difference, in that
we pass straight from hell’s door
into grey mists without a shore
and plod along, hands on our back
in straight lines or roundabouts,
forcing our minds to ignore
the depth of our punishment.
Our destiny, as it was then,
was meant to be for Evermore.
