Ladányi Mihály: I Could Have Lived Beautifully (Élhettem volna gyönyörűen in English)

Portre of Ladányi Mihály

Élhettem volna gyönyörűen (Hungarian)

Élhettem volna gyönyörűen,
megvolt a képességem rá,
hogy derűs legyen az estém és
egyetlen órám teltén se zokogjak.
Most hurkot dobnak rám az éjszakák,
vérereim torkomra csavarodnak.

Ha keserű vagyok, ki keserít?
Élem az életemet,
kenyér és szerető mindig kerül,
bor se hiányzik poharamból.

Nem vagyok elhagyatottabb, mint az izzadtan hadonászók,
a bádogtenyerűek,
a nyirkos szalmazsákon alvók.
Ha csavargok az országutakon
és egy falusi kocsmában
rákönyökölök a pultra,
nem írják elő törvények, hogy
ottmaradjak-e végleg,
vagy virradatkor
nekivágjak az országnak újra.

Élhettem volna gyönyörűen,
de a madarak tenyeremben költik ki fiókáikat,
s az utakat
valaki lábamhoz kötözte.
Élhettem volna gyönyörűen,
de most a házak énbennem épülnek
és dübörögve énbennem dőlnek össze.
Valaminek az eszköze vagyok,
mindig magamon érzek egy égő, nagy szemet,
s hányódom erre-arra, pedig
élhettem volna gyönyörűen.

I Could Have Lived Beautifully (English)

I could have lived beautifully,
I had the ability
to make my evenings cheerful and
not cry over any hour passing.
Now the nights lay a snare on me,
my veins enwind my throat.

If I’m bitter, who embitters me?
I live my life,
bread and lover always show up,
my glass isn’t in want of wine either.

I’m not more lonely than the sweaty blusterers
or the tin-handed,
the ones sleeping on clammy straw mattresses.
If I roam about on roads,
and in a village inn
I lean on the counter,
no law orders me to
stay there for good,
or at dawn
set out in the country again.

I could have lived beautifully,
but birds hatch their nestlings in my palm,
and the roads
have been tied to my feet.
I could have lived beautifully,
but now houses are being built inside me
and inside me they collapse rumbling.
I am the tool of something,
I always feel a burning, huge eye on me,
and I knock about the world, though
I could have lived beautifully.
