Hogy szerettem a képeket!

Istenem, mennyire szerettem,

ha ott fújtattak körülöttem,

horkoltak, ideges lovak –

Befogtam őket s rajta csak!

Hogy dobtam közibük a gyeplőt,

s ha az egész már szinte feldőlt,

akkor kaptam utána gyorsan,

feszítettem és visszafogtam,

a vágta és a fékezés

két gyönyörével két karomban.

Ma hátat forditok nekik.

Rugdalom a tér köveit.

S csak izmom rezdül meg a zajra,

mikor egy-egy mögém kerül,

s inas fejét vállamra hajtja.

How I loved those pictures!

God, how fond I was of them,

when they snorted round me then,

those routing, nervy horses - whoa!

I harnessed them, then off we'd go!

How I threw the reins down in between

them all, and things began to lean,

that's when I quickly grabbed and strained,

and pulled them up, was firm, unshaking,

with twin pleasures in both my arms of

all the sprinting and the braking.

I turn my back now when they’re there.

Keep kicking stones upon the square.

And only my muscles twitch it seems,

to sounds when one comes from behind,

and a sinewed head upon me leans.
