Nemes Nagy Ágnes: A visszajáró

Portre of Nemes Nagy Ágnes

A visszajáró (Hungarian)

Ez volt az asztal. Lapja, lába.
Ez volt a drót. Ez volt a lámpa.
Pohár is volt mellette. Itt van.
Ez volt a víz. És ebből ittam.

És kinéztem az ablakon.
És láttam: ferdén hull a pára,
nagy, égi fűz lógatja ágát
az esti rét sötét tavába,
és kinéztem az ablakon,
és volt szemem. És volt karom.

Most széklábak körül lakom.
Minden tárgynak térdéig érek.
Akkor vállal vágtam a térnek.
S mennyi madár volt. Mennyi tér.
Mint egy szélfújta lángfüzér
szirmai, tépve és lobogva
szálltak, rajokban sustorogva,
egy dobbanással szerterántva,
mintha egy szív madár-szilánkra
pattanna szét, repülne szét –
ez volt a tűz. Ez volt az ég.

Elmegyek. A padlólapot
ujjal érintgetném, ha tudnám.
Alacsony léghuzat, az utcán
húzódom. Nem vagyok.

Haunting (English)

It was the table. The board, the legs.
It was the wire. It was the lamp.
There was a glass, too, nearby. Here it is.
It was the water. And I drank from it.

And I looked out of the window.
And I saw the haze falling slantwise,
a huge, heavenly willow dangling its twigs
in the dark lake of the meadow at moonrise,
and out of the window I stared,
and I had eyes. And I had hands.

Now I’m living around the legs of chairs.
I only reach to the knee of everything.
Then against the world I dashed daringly.
And how many birds there were. How much space.
Like the petals of a garland of flames,
they were flying flickering and torn,
hissing in flocks by some wind blown,
with a throb twitching hither and thither
as if a heart burst into bird-splinters
scattered apart low and high -
it was the fire. It was the sky.

I’m leaving. My fingers would now
feel around the floor tiles, but how?
Low feels the draught, in the street
I’m drawing away. There’s no me.
