Nemes Nagy Ágnes: Tanulni kell

Portre of Nemes Nagy Ágnes

Tanulni kell (Hungarian)

Tanulni kell. A téli fákat.
Ahogyan talpig zuzmarásak.

Tanulni kell. A nyári felhőt.
A lobbanásnyi égi-erdőt.

Tanulni kell mézet, diót,
jegenyefát és űrhajót,

a hétfőt, keddet, pénteket,
a szavakat, mert édesek,

tanulni kell magyarul és világul,
tanulni kell mindazt, ami kitárul,

ami világít, ami jel:
tanulni kell, szeretni kell.

One Must Learn (English)

One must learn. The trees in winter.
As they are rime-frost all over.

One must learn. The clouds in summer.
Forests in the sky, they flicker.

One must learn honey and walnut,
poplars and the spaceship above,

the Monday, Tuesday and Friday,
the words because so sweet are they,

one must learn Magyar and the whole wide world,
one must learn all that would open unfurled,

all that gives light, all that’s a sign:
one must learn them, must love them fine.
