Radnóti Miklós: Old prisons (Ó, régi börtönök in English)

Portre of Radnóti Miklós

Ó, régi börtönök (Hungarian)

Ó, régi börtönök nyugalma, szép

    és régimódi szenvedés, halál

költőhalál, fennkölt és hősi kép,

tagolt beszéd, mely hallgatót talál, -

mily messzi már. A semmiségbe lép,

ki most mozdulni mer. A köd szitál.

A valóság, mint megrepedt cserép,

nem tart már formát és csak arra vár,

hogy szétdobhassa rossz szilánkjait.

Mi lesz most azzal, aki míg csak él,

amíg csak élhet, formában beszél

s arról, mi van, - ítélni így tanít.

S tanítna még. De minden szétesett.

Hát ül és néz. Mert semmit sem tehet.

Old prisons (English)

The stillness of old prisons, oh sublime

old fashioned suffering and noble death,

poetic death, a lofty, heroic picture,

composed and measured talk that holds attention –

where are you now? Oblivion receives

the one who dares to move. The fog descends.

Reality is like a cracked vessel that cannot

maintain its form and only waits to scatter

its shattered shapeless fragments everywhere.

What will become of one who would, while still

allowed to live, discuss reality

in formal order, and teach the art of judgment,

who would still teach, though all has burst apart,

who sits and stares, for nothing one can do.
