(…) Bár: én is féltem. Mindenki…!
(…) A szívcseppeket, Hans… hetvenéves vagyok. A klaviatúra nevetségesen könnyen megadja magát. Méghogy játszhatatlanok a dolgaim! Hogy sose írom elő nekik az ujjrendet! Milyen pitiáner társaság, ne vigyorogj, fiam… Így, félvakon, szivarral az ujjaim közt is abszolválom bárkinek a bármilyen művét, amit akarnak! Amit csak akarok…!
(…) Az a lényeg, hogy ne méricskélj. Hiába matematika, ahogy manapság mondják: a nagy fúgák hangjai – in aeternum – megmérhetetlenek, Hans. Most jöjjön Chopin.

Hans Bülow Is Listening To His Master, Ferenc Liszt (English)

Don’t lie to me, boy. It isn’t the Polish cavalry; I’m not hard of hearing yet. Don’t forget, music is simple, but it’s impossible to revise. Even Appassionata is of no interest if you think your technical perfection or the absolute knowledge of the twenty-four tonalities means something. Not even the fact that you play the piano prima vista; all keyboard-acrobats are capable of such a show. What’s more: you’ve been the best ever to be taught; and so was my son-in-law. Don’t regret Cosima: as a matter of fact, it’s you who escaped from her. She’s devoured Richard entirely. Don’t ever get scared. If you’re scared, the musical score will get the upper hand of you and humiliate you. I know it! How on earth would I not know: You are the only chorus-master, who knows each single note of all parts of the nine symphonies. I also know that after you it’s impossible to mount that music-stand in the one-time way as a conductor again. It’s good as it is; at least you discipline this mob of an orchestra… Still… Don’t respect orchestral scores so much.
(…) Although: I, too, was scared. Long ago… that deaf German, in Vienna. He saw my fingers. When in the end he came up on the stage, I thought he’d slap me in the face, minimo calculo it was four times that I struck the wrong note. Then he only kissed me; I remember he smelt of coffee… And I haven’t got any more time, either, Hans. Nobody’s willing as much as listen to what I’m composing now.  Not even you… and Richard… after Csardas Macabre he was staring at me as if I was a… a music critic. When he heard Nuages gris he flounced out of the parlour frantically, and Cosima was hissing like a fury: I made him nervous although his doctors had forbidden him to get excited… the good Richard… usually he… well… he borrows his main themes from me. I understand Him; and You as well. My music, boy: Ohne Tonart. It’s got no tonality. Just as You shouted: it’s Unmusik! And I’m already laughed at. Do you think I’m not aware of it? All my students do, even Stradal, and also Thoman…You, too… Everyone…!
(…) The heart-drops, please, Hans… I’m seventy. How much applause, how many hysterical lady’s letters… well… Of no importance any more… But still: somewhere, some time Villa d’Este can be heard and then it’ll be croaked unisono: Zukunftmusik started with me… It’s black-and-white here. The keyboard capitulates ridiculously easily. Well I never! that my things can’t be played! That I never finger them! What a narrow-minded company, oh, boy, don’t grin… Even just as you see me now, almost blind, smoking a cigar I can finish anybody’s work of any kind, whatever they may want! Whatever I want…!
(…) The main thing is that you shouldn’t measure. In spite of all mathematics, as it's said today ’the sounds of great fugues are in aeternum unmeasurable’, Hans. Let’s see Chopin now. I want the lancers as they’re storming. You can win or lose with them, we can’t help that. But besides that… with every beat of your heart and with every vibration of your hand it’s you who can settle infinite harmony.
