Szabédi László: The marriage of death (details) (Halál házasító (részletek) in English)

Portre of Szabédi László

Halál házasító (részletek) (Hungarian)

I

Új hold! Új király!

Házasodik a halál!

Kit akar elvenni?

Vegye el az égi holtat,

vegye el a régi holdat,

vegye el a reménytelen,

csillagtalan éjszakát,

vegye el a reménytelen

szegény ember bánatát.

ha kit akar elvenni.

IV

Új hold! Új király!

Házasodik a halál!

Jaj, kit ejt teherbe?

Jaj, egy meddő emberöltőt,

ejtse teherbe a költőt,

azt, ki életet ígér,

s feláldozza önmagát

a jobb jövő kedviért;-

jaj, magát, csak magát

ne ejtse teherbe!

The marriage of death (details) (English)

I

New moon! New king!

Death is marrying!

Who will be his bride?

Let him take the heaven’s dead,

take the old moon for a bride,

let him take the dreadful black

of the night without a star,

let him take the hopeless ache

of the creature who is poor,

if he has to take a bride.

IV

New moon! New king!

Death is marrying!

Whom to fecundate?

Oh, this generation’s womb

is barren. Let the poet teem,

he who dearly loves to make

promise of life and sacrifice

for a better future’s sake –

only let death not for us

breed but death upon himself.
