Szabó Lőrinc: Nothing Else (Egyéb nem in English)

Portre of Szabó Lőrinc

Egyéb nem (Hungarian)

Minthogy belőle egyéb nem maradt,

szeretem, ami körülötte volt,

a kis párnát, melyre feje hajolt,

karperecét, elárvúlt tárgyakat,

a kulcsot, mely hozzá vitt, távolabb

erdőket, városokat, úti port,

amit együtt vertünk fel, a mosolyt,

mely szivéből a szemébe szaladt,

mikor festették: – nem pótolja, de

az egész világ tele van vele

s most tudom csak igazán, mennyire;

ég s föld s minden őhozzá kapcsolat:

szeretnem kell gondolataimat,

minthogy belőle egyéb nem maradt.

Nothing Else (English)

Because nothing else of her has been left

I love everything that was around her,

the pillow on which her head used to rest,

her bracelet, all of her orphaned objects,

the key that took me to her, over there

the forests, the towns, then all the road dust

once scuffed up by the two of us, the smile

that from her heart ran straight into her eyes

when being painted: - no substitute, just

the whole wide world is so imbued with her,

and it’s only now that I know how much;

sky and earth and all things connect to her:

I must love my own memories at best

because nothing else of her has been left.
