Szabó Lőrinc: Two Girls, Ankles to Knees (Két lány térdtől bokáig in English)

Portre of Szabó Lőrinc

Két lány térdtől bokáig (Hungarian)

Négy gyönyörű láb
libbent autóba.
Két lány. Legalább
tudnám, ki volt!
Nem érdekel már
az utca, semmi,
csak menni kéne,
utána menni
négy villanásnak,
gyalázatos szép
csalogatásnak,
valami könnyű,
gazdag örömnek,
annak, ami ott
libbent autóba
és tudja Isten,
hol jár azóta!

Négy gyönyörű láb
libbent autóba.
Többet nem láttam.
Két nő. Ki volt?
Rohan az utca
föl és alá;
jöttek és szöktek;
honnan? hová?
Nyugodtak, szépek,
piszok az élet,
hej, hogy örülne
dühöm nekik!
Két nő: melyik szebb?
Kéne: melyik?
Négy lábat láttam,
azt se sokáig,
két gyönyörű lányt
térdtől bokáig.

Nem érdekel már
az utca, semmi,
csak menni kéne,
utánuk menni,
örülni nékik
térdtől bokáig,
s tovább, sokáig,
örülni újra
valami jónak,
ami gyerekké
ringat-altat:
keresni bennük
a nyugalmat,
katona lelkem
tűnt vendégét,
érdes életem
ellentétét.

Mondd, igazán bűn,
hogy e két lányban
valami újat
úgy megkívántam,
valami könnyűt
és idegent?
Ha bűn, legyen bűn:
bűn akkor a jaj
s gazember mind a
szegény s fiatal.
Négy gyönyörű láb
libbent autóba,
és tudja Isten
hol jár azóta;
valami itt volt
és lehagyott, –
be fáj, hogy egyszer
meghalok.

Two Girls, Ankles to Knees (English)

Four ravishing legs
slipped into a car.
Two girls. My mind begs
to know who they are!
The streets and all mean
nothing to me now,
except to follow,
to catch up somehow,
to glimpse those visions,
those devastating
four apparitions,
temptresses of
wonders, elysians,
ephemera that
slipped into that car,
and went who knows where,
and who knows how far!

Four ravishing legs
slipped into a car.
That was all I saw.
Who were those two?
The streets a mad rush
through and through;
they came, they fled;
from where? where to?
Calmly, gracefully
as life is filth,
oh, how they could
vanquish my blues!
Two pretty women:
How would I choose?
Four legs I saw,
gone with the breeze,
two gorgeous girls,
ankles to knees.

The streets and all mean
nothing to me now,
except to follow,
to catch up somehow,
to cherish them
from ankles to knees,
and on as we please,
to adore something
as I had before,
and be rocked to sleep
as a child once more:
to seek in them my
quietude of yore,
long absent from
my militant soul,
to make again
my jagged life whole.

Is it a sin, really,
that in these two girls
I found a new fire
to fan my desire,
something weightless
and unfamiliar?
If it is a sin,
so be it, then
scoundrels all the young
and destitute men.
Four ravishing legs
slipped into a car,
and went who knows where,
and who knows how far;
something was here,
and passed me by –
oh, shame, that one day
I too must die.
