Weöres Sándor: Eternal life (Öröklét in English)

Portre of Weöres Sándor
Portre of Kery, Leslie A.

Back to the translator

Öröklét (Hungarian)

A Föld, hol az élet terem,

a mindent elnyelő sírverem

a síkság, hegy, tenger, folyó

öröknek látszik és muló.

Világűr és mennyboltozat

sok forgó égi kapcsolat

a milliárdnyi tűzgolyó

öröknek látszik és muló.

Mit eltemet a feledés,

egy gyík-kúszás, egy szárnyverés,

egy rezdület mely elpörög

Múlónak látszik és örök

Mert ami egyszer végbement

azon nem másít semmi rend,

se Isten, se az ördögök:

mulónak látszik és örök.

Eternal life (English)

The earth, which yielded life galore,

The pit of the grave: that omnivore,

Plains and mountains, waters meeting

Seem eternal, yet are fleeting.

Deep space, the skies beyond our reach,

Heavenly twisting rules for each,

Fiery bodies parting, greeting,

Seem eternal, yet are fleeting.

Each forgotten, buried thing,

A lizard's creep, a fluttered wing,

Chance sound of a past endeavour:

Each seems fleeting, lasts forever.

For that which was, or came to be,

is not undone by law, decree,

God, the devil, whosoever:

Each seems fleeting, lasts forever.
