Weöres Sándor: Pastoral (Tájkép in English)

Portre of Weöres Sándor

Tájkép (Hungarian)

Ködbe-hanyatlott régi vidék –
Könnyez a felhő, szürke az ég…

Alszik a ködben a csonka határ –
Délen a tájrul a nyári madár…

Messzire néznek a szürke hegyek –
Állnak az égen a hóseregek…

Ködbe-takartan alszik a táj
Alszik az őszben… tél-fele jár…

Házak a tájban gondtalanul –
Ködteli földre az ősz szava hull…

Barna a tájék, sárga a fa –
Nyikkan a csöndben a tél fogata…

Csörren a csermely, dermed a tó –
Halkan a tájra hullik a hó…

Elmegy a sárga, jő a fehér –
Hóba takarva nyargal a szél…

Cukros a házak rőt fedele –
Halva vonaglik az ősz ereje…

Nyargal a tájon a hóval a szél –
Elmegy az ősz és itten a tél…

Halkan a tájék télbe borul –
Mindig a régi…mindig az új..

Pastoral (English)

Mist-buried landscape, long trodden by -
Cloud cover weeping, soot colored sky…

Sleep-stricken country, broken and veiled -
Birds of the sun gone, to southern trails

Grey peaks of mountains, in rueful gaze -
Snow-covered sabers pierce through the haze…

Draped in a mist asleep is the land -
Winter encroaches fall’s listless end…

Homes line the landscape, show not a care -
Spells of the fall adrift in the air...

Burnished the country, amber the trees -
Silently strangled in winter’s squeeze…

Brooks trickle softly, frozen the lakes -
Earth blanketed by a blitz of snowflakes…

Gone is the amber, white takes it place -
Winds run amok in a snowy embrace...

Gingerbread houses, roofs flaming red -
Autumn recoils powerless, near dead ...

Winds run amok through snow-laden parts -
Winter arrives and autumn departs…

Softly the land takes a wintery hue -
Always the once-was…always the new...
