Zrínyi Miklós: Epilogue to the Zrinyiad (Peroratio in English)

Portre of Zrínyi Miklós

Epilogue to the Zrinyiad (English)

My monument is done, my task has ended,
That steel nor covetous Time shall overthrow,
Fire shall not spoil, nor Heaven 's wrath offend it,
Nor Envy, the great Enemy, bring it low.

The day that dawns to claim my mortal part
Small spend its might upon my flesh, and die.
Then, as it fades away, my nobler part
Shall sweep upon the wind towards the sky.

As long as time endures, my name shall sound,
In distant Scythia, whence the Magyars come.
In all lands where their exploits still resound
To men who know their honour and their fame.

I have earned fame not only with my song
But also with this warrior's sword men dread:
I battled with the Turk my whole life long,
And joyed to strew my homeland with his dead.
