Caproni, Giorgio: Everything (Tutto in English)

Portre of Caproni, Giorgio

Tutto (Italian)

Hanno bruciato tutto.
La chiesa. La scuola.
Il municipio.

                        Tutto.
               Anche l’erba.

                        Anche,
col camposanto, il fumo
tenero della ciminiera
della fornace.

                        Illesa,
albeggia sola la rena e l’acqua:
l’acqua che trema alla mia voce,
e specchia lo squallore
di un grido senza sorgente.

                       La gente
non sai più dove sia.

Bruciata anche l’osteria.
Anche la corriera.

                       Tutto.

Non resta nemmeno il lutto,
nel grigio, ad aspettar la sola
(inesistente) parola.

Everything (English)

They have burned everything.

The church.  The school.

The town hall.

                  Everything.

             Even the grass.

                  Even,

with the graveyard,

the slim smoke from the stack

of the furnace.

                 Sage,

sand and water moving;

water trembling at my voice,

reflecting the sadness of

a scream from nowhere.

                 You

do not know where people may be.

The tavern, also burned.

The mail train too.

                 Everything.

Not even mourning is left,

in the grey, to wait for the last

(nonexistent) word.
