Colonna, Vittoria: Rime spirituali 79 (Rime spirituali 79 in English)

Portre of Colonna, Vittoria

Dal sentier dritto s’antivede il fine;

Rime spirituali 79 (English)

I cannot say, oh, my sweet comfort, if this be
the right place and time to act on this desire
to make it clear that such adoring be on fire,
a wanton burning which I also sense in me.

To whatever places these small pleasures take me
intending to diminish my sense of true honour
I stand firm, despite what your grace feels I harbour,
other fair ports again I shall no longer see.

The world is filled with twigs and thorns and spikes, I know.
The wise shall not derail from the straight, chosen path
that fate had bestowed until the end, so long ago

despite my deep love and little faith, I am beset
with things divine, invisible, on high plateau,
not to delay the course of redemption and regret.
