L’umana vita è oscura e dolorosa,

non è ferma in lei nessuna cosa.

 

Solo il passo del Tempo è sempre uguale.

Amor fa un anno come un giorno breve;

il tedio accoglier numerosi gli anni

può in una sola giornata; ma il passo

suo non sosta, né muta. Era Chiaretta

una fanciulla, ed ora è giovanetta,

sarà donna domani. E si riceve,

queste cose pensando, un colpo in mezzo

del cuore. Appena, a non pensarle, l’arte

mi giova; fare in me di molte e sparse

cose una sola e bella. E d’ogni male

mi guarisce un bel verso. Oh quante volte

– e questa ancora – per lui che nessuno

piú sa né intende, sopra l’onte e i danni,

 

sono partito da Malinconia

e giunto a Beatitudine per via.

Sötét az emberélet, csupa bánat,

és benne semmi, semmi meg nem állhat.

 

Csupán csak az Idő egyforma léptű.

Szerelmünk esztendőket napra szűkít,

s a megcsömörlés is tengernyi évet

sűrít egy napba, ámde ballagása

meg nem pihen, nem változik. Chiaretta

tegnap leányka volt, ma ifjú nő már,

ki holnap asszony lesz talán. Az ember

ha erre gondol, szíven ütve döbben.

Hogy mind e gondot űzzem - írok, mert a

művészet éltet engem, rendezetlen

szívem világát szép egységbe fogja.

Fájdalmaimra mindig a vers a gyógyír.

Övé az érdem rég s ma is - mit senki

nem ért, nem ismer kínja, kára közben -,

 

hogy fájdalommal terhes életemben

végtére mégis boldog ember lettem.
