Hikmet, Nâzım: Welcome, my woman (Hoş geldin kadınım in English)

Portre of Hikmet, Nâzım

Hoş geldin kadınım (Turkish)

Hoş geldin kadınım benim hoş geldin
yorulmuşsundur;
nasıl etsemde yıkasam ayacıklarını
ne gül suyum ne gümüş leğenim var,
susamışsındır;
buzlu şerbetim yok ki ikram edeyim
acıkmışsındır;
beyaz ketenli örtülü sofralar kuramam
memleket gibi yoksuldur odam.

Hoş geldin kadınım benim hoş geldin
ayağını basdın odama
kırk yıllık beton, çayır çimen şimdi
güldün,
güller açıldı penceremin demirlerinde
ağladın,
avuçlarıma döküldü inciler
gönlüm gibi zengin
hürriyet gibi aydınlık oldu odam...

Hoş geldin kadınım benim hoş geldin.

Welcome, my woman (English)

Welcome, my woman, welcome.
You must be tired;
But how on earth can I wash your tiny feet?
I have neither rose attar, nor a silver washtub.
You must be thirsty;
But I don't have some sherbet with ice to offer you.
You must be hungry;
But I can't set a table with flaxen cloth.
My chamber is poor like my homeland.

Welcome, my woman, welcome.
You stepped on my floor;
And forty-year-old concrete floor is now a meadow.
You smiled;
And roses have blossomed in front of the iron bars of my window.
You cried;
And pearls got shed on my palms.
My chamber is now rich like my heart,
Bright like the freedom...

Welcome, my woman, welcome.
