József Attila: She rises at dawn like the bakers (Hajnalban kel föl, mint a pékek in English)

Hajnalban kel föl, mint a pékek (Hungarian)

Kedvesem erősderekú, karcsú asszony,
ültem már repülőgépen, magasból ő is kicsinek látszik,
de pilótalétemre is megbecsülném.

Maga mossa a ruhát, a hab álmodozva reszket karjain,

akik a jólsütő kemencék rokonai,
hosszú lapáttal őrködnek fölöttünk,
fölverődik a liszt és odaszáll a szép,

szabad mellükre, ahol meg nyugodtan
elalszik, mint kedvesem a jószagú ágyban,
hogy elmosogatott s tisztára ölelte szívemet.

Feleségem is ilyen lesz, ha majd
egész emberré növök
és megházasodom, mint az apám.

1925. júl.

She rises at dawn like the bakers (English)

My dear one is a strong-backed, slim woman,
I have sat on aircraft, from high up she looks small as well,
but I would appreciate her even as a pilot.

She does her own washing, the foam trembles dreamily on her arms,
she kneels as if to pray, scrubs the floor
and laughs heartily when done, her laughter is like the apple's

that she bites, skin and all, at those times
that, too, laughs loudly, when kneading dough for bread
she rises at dawn like the bakers

who, being kindred to the well-baking ovens,
stand guard over us with long-handled peels,
the flour rises and drifts onto their fine,

bare chests, where it quietly
goes to sleep, like my dear one in the fresh- smelling bed,
after doing the washing-up and clean-hugging my heart.

My wife will be like that as well,
when I grow into manhood
and marry, like my father.
