Biography
Edvīns Raups (real name Edvīns Struka) was born in Sigulda in 1962 and studied at the Riga Polytechnics Institute and at the English Language and Literature Department of the Faculty of Foreign Languages, University of Latvia. His poetry collections ‘Vēja nav’ (No Wind, 1991) and ‘Dzīvo damies’ (Live-ing, 1995) earned him one of the most original poetry debuts of his time. Raups had been working for the weekly ‘Kultūras Forums’. The year 1997 saw the publication of Raups’ collection ‘33 mīklaini dzīves gadi un dzejoļi’ (33 Mysterious Years and Poems). His fourth book of poetry ‘uzvāri man kaut ko pārejošu’ (cook up something transitory for me) was released in 2002. The poetry collection ‘Putn’ (Bir') was published in 2008. Edvīns Raups is considered to be one of the greatest innovators in Latvian poetry of the 1990s. Critics often use the term “surrealism” in connection with his poetry. Raups has received several important Latvian literary awards. His translations from Spanish include major works of Julio Cortàzar and Jorge Luis Borges. His poetry has been translated into English, Czech, Finnish, German, Russian and Turkish, among other languages. In 2003, a book of poetry by Raups was published in Sweden, and, in 2010, the Canadian publisher Guernica Editions published Then Touch Me Here, a volume of his selected poems.
