Landor, Walter Savage: Epigramma VIII (Epigram VIII in Hungarian)

Portre of Landor, Walter Savage
Portre of Kálnoky László

Back to the translator

Epigram VIII (English)

There falls with every wedding chime

A feather from the wing of Time.

You pick it up, and say "How fair

To look upon its colours are !"

Another drops day after day

Unheeded ; not one word you say.

When bright and dusky are blown past.

Upon the herse there nods the last.

Epigramma VIII (Hungarian)

Hull, ha a nász harangja szól,

az Idő szárnyáról a toll.

Fölveszed és így szólsz: „Nini,

milyen szépek a színei!"

Újabb toll hull le napra-nap,

észrevétlen; s már nincs szavad.

Sötét, fehér ha elfogyott,

egy a koporsón imbolyog.
