MacDiarmid, Hugh: Ím, gyermek születik (Lo! A Child is Born in Hungarian)

Lo! A Child is Born (English)I thought of a house where the stones seemed suddenly changed And become instinct with hope, hope as solid as themselves, And the atmosphere warm with that lovely heat, The warmth of tenderness and longing souls, the smiling anxiety That rules a home where a child is about to be born. The walls were full of ears. All voices were lowered. Only the mother had to right to groan or complain. Then I thought of the whole world. Who cares for its travail And seeks to encompass it in like loving kindness and peace? There is a monstrous din of the sterile who contribute nothing To the great end in view, and the future fumbles, A bid birth, not like the child in that gracious home Heard in the quietness turning in its mother's womb A strategic mind already, seeking the best way To present himself to life, and at last, resolved, Springing into history quivering like a fish, Dropping into the world like a ripe fruit in due time - But where is the Past to which Time, smiling through her tears At her new-born son, can turn crying: 'I love you'?

Ím, gyermek születik (Hungarian)Egy ház járt az eszemben: úgy tűnt, hirtelen átalakulnak mind a kövek, kitelnek tapintható reménnyel, s a szobák langyosak, átjárja őket a gyöngéd hő, a vágyó lelkeké, mosolygó nyugtalanság, az otthoné, hol gyermek fog születni.
