Ady Endre: By the Tisza (A Tisza-parton in English)

Portre of Ady Endre

A Tisza-parton (Hungarian)

Jöttem a Gangesz partjairól,
Hol álmodoztam déli verőn,
A szívem egy nagy harangvirág
S finom remegések: az erőm.

Gémes kút, malom alja, fokos,
Sivatag, lárma, durva kezek,
Vad csókok, bambák, álom-bakók.
A Tisza-parton mit keresek?

By the Tisza (English)

I’m coming from the Ganges’ banks,
Used to daydream on the Southern flanks,
With my heart as huge as a heath-bell,
Where the fine shivers of my strength dwell.

Millstone, arc, Magyar bow and axe,
Fallows, fellows, rough hands and sex,
Vehement kisses, oafish and crude,
By the Tisza, why would I intrude?
